They Pronounced It Correctly! |
I was completely surprised when the foreign policy part of the first 2008 Presidential Debate rolled around, and both Obama and McCain pronounced \"Pakistan\" correctly. It was not the westernized \"Pack-is-tan\", but rather the actual \"Paak-iss-than\" that slipped from both of their mouths as they discussed terrorism and relations with the troubled country. I love them both for actually taking the time (which was probably about 5 minutes) to learn how to pronounce \"Pakistan\" correctly, because that shows that both of them are globally aware and respectful of other cultures. I mean, President Bush is the laughingstock of the U.N. for his horrible mispronounciations of other countries and official\'s names. I don\'t think we should, as Americans, have some kind of superiority complex where we can just pronounce things the way we want to. We should really make an effort to understand and respect other nations and their people, because it will drastically improve our image abroad. I\'m really glad that Obama and McCain both made that effort, and I hope that they will improve their pronounciations of other coutntries as well. Kavita Chapla, senior, Titusville High School |

The best trip ever to NYC! |
After going from little Melbourne to the big apple, it\'s quite a difference. The sea of people, the busy streets, the celebrities...all things you\'d never find here in Brevard. Just the everyday busy lifestyle of a New Yorker is unlike anything I\'ve ever seen. New York City definitely lives up to its name though of the city that never sleeps. There\'s always something fun and exciting to do. My family and I went up there for a family reunion but became a little distracted with the city. In the 4 day period there, I saw about a dozen celebrities including The Pussycat Dolls, Jay Alexander, and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter). I got to see the taping Regis and Kelly, a play on Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and so much more. With special VIP passes that my family got (since my parents know the owner\'s wife of NBC), we got our own private tour of the entire NBC Headquarters. I got to check out behind the scenes of the Today Show while they were taping a live segment and got to see all the other TV sets there such as Saturday Night live and The Nightly News. New York was awesome and I can\'t wait to go back someday.

It\'s Slightly Cool Outside! |
I don\'t know about the rest of you, but I was pretty excited when I stepped outside this morning. It was actually less than 80 degrees, and the breeze I felt as I went to pick up the newspaper was cool. This entire day was just amazing. I hope this beautiful weather continues, because I am so ready for fall to begin. Kavita Chapla, senior, Titusville High School |

Drinking Diaries |
How\'s this for a buzz kill? According to the latest study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 28.5 percent of high school students said that in the past month, they rode in a car with a driver who had been drinking. In 2006, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that people who began drinking before the legal age were about four times as likely to have an alcohol problem than adults who had their first taste at 21 or older. In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control reported that more than 23 percent of sexually active students drank alcohol or used drugs before their last sexual encounter. Almost a quarter of sexually active teens had unprotected sex because they were using drugs or alcohol. Also, according to the CDC, underage drinking can cause lifelong harm, from liver damage to an increased risk of addiction later on in life. Despite all of these statistics, a group of college professors have proposed the Amethyst Initiative, which will lower the legal drinking age.
